In 1991, Mickey Kupchyk, Doug Hennig, and three other partners in Regina, Saskatchewan started Stonefield Systems Group.

The name comes from the founder's memory of working in the stony wheat fields of Saskatchewan. The company eventually broke in two, creating a successful Accpac reseller and a software developer called Stonefield Software.

The software side had some growing pains. The software was priced too low. The company was in too many markets. And it was giving away source code and tech support for free.

But CEO Mickey Kupchyk and team hung in there, and the company's query tool is now a respected add-in to a dozen products like Accpac and ACT!

And like most ISVs, Stonefield is always trying to catch the attention of more dealers. But its software is only one of dozens of products all competing for mindshare from the same dealers.

Stonefield has done trade shows, e-mails, faxes, and direct mail, but company CEO Mickey Kupchyk is always thinking about new promotions.

"One day I was standing by our receptionist when the mail came in," he recalls. "And I watched as she sorted it out in piles. Pile #1 was checks, pile #2 was invoices, and pile #3 was everything else. And she immediately opened the first pile."

That got Kupchyk thinking.

"I did about five face plants,'' Kupchyk recalls about his first experience at the speed skating oval at Mount Pleasant Park.

Kupchyk emerged as a record-setting force in the masters division in long- and short-track speed skating this year after only 14 months in the sport. Kupchyk, a 50-year-old native of Regina, set 17 Saskatchewan records, six Canadian and three North American marks in the masters Group 3 (50-59) category.
